I designed an AI-powered simulation to help managers practice handling challenging conversations in a multigenerational workplace.
The simulation is used as a practical activity at the end of a training session on multigenerational workforce dynamics. Instead of simply discussing how managers should communicate across generations, learners can practice the skill in a realistic conversation with an AI employee.
The AI agent takes on the role of a Gen Z employee who approaches the manager with a workplace concern or complaint. The learner initiates the conversation, asks questions, explores the employee's perspective, and responds to the situation.
Once the conversation is complete, the AI agent transitions from the employee role into a coach role and provides structured feedback on the learner's approach, communication and handling of the situation.
Scenario-based learning – learners apply concepts from the training to a realistic workplace situation rather than simply recalling information.
Experiential learning – the simulation creates an opportunity to practice a difficult conversation in a safe, low-risk environment.
Role-play with AI – the agent dynamically responds as a Gen Z employee, allowing the conversation to unfold naturally rather than following a fixed script.
Learner-centered practice – the learner controls the conversation, deciding what questions to ask and how to respond to the employee's concern.
Psychological safety – AI provides a private environment for practicing potentially uncomfortable conversations before applying the skills with real employees.
Immediate feedback – after the role-play, the agent switches into a coaching role and provides actionable feedback on the learner's communication and approach.
Prompt engineering for learning – the AI agent was intentionally designed with defined role, context, behavioral boundaries, conversation logic and feedback criteria to keep the simulation aligned with the learning objectives.
Transforms a theoretical topic into an interactive practice experience
Gives managers an opportunity to rehearse difficult conversations in a safe environment
Provides immediate, personalized feedback without requiring an additional facilitator
Demonstrates a practical use case for generative AI beyond content creation
Supports the transfer of learning from training concepts to workplace behavior
Creates a scalable simulation format that can be adapted to different workplace scenarios, employee profiles and learning objectives
Provides a reusable framework for incorporating AI role-play into future leadership and communication programs
